Sumatra

Sumatra is part of the Sundaland biodiversity hotspot and hosts a rich diversity of flora and fauna. A total of 582 bird species have been recorded on the island, with over 25 endemics such as the Sumatran Laughingthrush, Sumatran Woodpecker, Sumatran Drongo, and Sumatran Trogon. Our birding tours span from lowland rainforests to high mountain habitats. Visitors may also encounter endemic primates like the Black Gibbon, Lar Gibbon, and Thomas’s Leaf Monkey.

Beutung Forest Reserve

The Beutung Forest Reserve is part of the vast Leuser Ecosystem, covering approximately 127,000 hectares. It is home to 132 mammal species, including the Sumatran Tiger, Clouded Leopard, and Thomas’s Leaf Monkey. The area also supports 382 bird species, including 23 endemics such as the Aceh Bulbul, Sumatran Laughingthrush, and Sumatran Woodpecker.

Access

Our birding sites are accessible via Cut Nyak Dien Airport (MEQ) in Meulaboh, just 1.5 hours away by car. Alternatively, visitors can fly into Sultan Iskandar Muda International Airport (BTJ) in Banda Aceh and reach the site in approximately 6.5 hours by road.

Kedah

The village of Kedah lies on the edge of pristine rainforest near a small stream at an elevation of around 1,400 meters, about 15 km from Blangkejeren, Gayo Lues Regency. It is a perfect base for birders seeking to explore montane forests and observe endemics such as the Blue-masked Leafbird, Sumatran Drongo, Bronze-tailed Peacock-Pheasant, and Roll’s Partridge.

Ketambe

Ketambe is a village located in Southeast Aceh District, which is one of the entrances to Gunung Leuser National Park. In the Ketambe forest we can see orangutans, tigers, gibbons, birds, and other endemic animals of Sumatra. This forest has amazing natural beauty and is an ecotourism area often visited by tourists.

Access to Ketambe and Kedah

To get to Ketambe and Kedah, you can go via Banda Aceh, driving for 12 hours, or from Medan, driving for 10 hours.

Simeulue

Simeulue Island is one of the districts in Aceh Province, Indonesia, covering an area of 18,382 km² with a population of approximately 92,865. Lasikin airport (ICAO: WITG) provides air access to the island.
